Zoo Abandoned Animals And Left Them To Die Without Food Or Water…

Three lions, two bears, and two guinea pigs were left to die in their tiny concrete zoo cells in Gyumri, Armenia… months ago. Disheveled, wounded, starving and dehydrated, these animals are desperate for a new home, repeatedly trying to escape.

Former pets of an Armenian billionaire oligarch, purchased for use at jungle-themed parties, they were abandoned by their owner, Stepan Vardanyan, whose whereabouts are unknown.

The zoo was set up 2010, and ran into trouble soon. The owner couldn’t care for the animals but also didn’t want them put down. But instead, they were left to die, and these seven are the only survivors.

A local elderly couple, Hovhamnes and Alvina Madoyan, retired and in financial trouble, found the zoo and have dedicated their lives to caring for these poor animals. They moved into a nearby shack and fed the animals, along with giving them water.

The animals still seem to be losing their minds in their cages, however, pacing and waiting for rescue. But help is on the way—an international coalition of animal rescue groups has come to help.

The coalition includes IAR, WVS, Born Free Foundation, Brigitte Bardot Foundation, Pro Paws, the Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Assets, and SOS Gyumri Zoo Animals, a local group.

Worldwide Veterinary Service transported the bears to a temporary home at the Yerevan Zoo, on their way to the Libearty Bear Sanctuary in Romania.

The other animals are still waiting for help.
